Về Celo
Celo is an Ethereum L2 aimed at mobile payments and users in emerging markets, built on OP Stack with EigenDA for data availability and support for paying gas directly in stablecoins such as USDC and USDT. Remittances and small payments are fee-sensitive, and requiring users to hold a volatile asset for gas raises the cost of onboarding wallets and merchants. Celo keeps a protocol-level list of accepted fee currencies, so the sequencer charges transactions in stablecoin terms while blocks and settlement return to Ethereum, and a phone-number mapping lowers the friction of entering an address. Third-quarter 2026 revenue rose 21% quarter on quarter, 90-day fees grew 280%, and daily active addresses reached about 459,000.
The trade-off is that fee revenue is tied to stablecoin transfer volume: if remittance demand or wallet distribution contracts, sequencer income falls with it. Pricing fees in stablecoins also exposes protocol revenue to the dollar liquidity cycle rather than to onchain usage alone.

Revenue and buybacks: In April the CELOccelerate proposal passed with over 97% approval, sending 100% of net sequencer revenue, including stablecoin gas fees paid in CELO, back to the community fund; roughly 9.1 million CELO has been bought back since April.
Fundamentals and supply: Third-quarter revenue rose 21% quarter on quarter and 90-day fees jumped 280%, with 459,000 daily active users ranking first among L2s; Opera received a one-off 160 million CELO allocation, and whether to burn it is still a governance decision, the main supply uncertainty.
On July 22, 2026 Celo's mainnet execution client moved from op-geth to op-reth, after Sepolia switched on June 24, since op-geth will not follow the canonical chain once the Glamsterdam fork lands. The Jovian hard fork activated in March, and in May OP Succinct was upgraded to SP1 Hypercube, cutting proof generation time by more than 75% and cost by more than 60%.
On the application side, ERC-8004 lets agents on Celo carry portable reputation and be discovered globally, and Celo Core Co. launched its own x402 facilitator settling through EIP-3009 transferWithAuthorization at under $0.001 in gas for USDC and USD₮. The ecosystem hosts more than 25 native stablecoins and MiniPay has over 12.6 million wallets. Opera won a governance vote for a 160 million CELO allocation, replacing quarterly dollar-denominated grants.
Future strategy and roadmap: Celo migrated its mainnet execution client from op-geth to op-reth in July and will next deploy the Espresso decentralized sequencer on testnet and target mainnet in the fourth quarter of 2026 to sharply cut confirmation latency, while preparing the Karst hardfork and continuing the Rust-based Kona fault-proving stack. The team is also researching expanding CELO utility beyond gas and raising decentralization, and advancing ERC-8004 agent identity and the x402 facilitator for stablecoin payments, absorbing the Lisk ecosystem migration.
