Linea is a Consensys zkEVM Layer2 compatible with Solidity developers that submits transaction validity to Ethereum in batches via ZK proofs, bootstrapped by the MetaMask and Infura ecosystem. Its zkEVM uses a PLONK-based ZK proving system to compress state transitions, with the sequencer submitting proofs and data to Ethereum L1 to inherit security; the economic model uses a dual-burn mechanism, 20% of ETH gas fees burned directly and the remaining 80% buying and burning LINEA, tying token scarcity to network usage, while Yield Boost and SharpLink's institutional deployment aim to turn the L2 into an ETH capital yield layer, with TVL peaking at $1.64 billion.
In September 2026 Consensys completed its split and about 960 million LINEA unlocked, all routed to the Linea Consortium's long-term alignment programs, yet its trade-off is a centralized sequencer and Stage 0 status still contested, with monthly unlocks expected into the 2030s and current burns not yet offsetting dilution.

On September 10, 2026, Consensys completed its split: the existing entity rebranded as MetaMask, while a newly formed Consensys holds the institutional infrastructure business including Linea, Besu and Teku, with Joe Lubin leading both companies. On the same day, roughly 960 million LINEA (about 3% of circulating supply) were unlocked, all routed to the Linea Consortium's Ignition and long-term alignment programs, with none going to public holders.

In April 2026 Linea Yield Boost began a five-stage rollout, staking idle bridged ETH on Ethereum mainnet through Lido V3 and recycling the yield into ecosystem incentives, with a 40% unstaked buffer and a last-resort stETH mint; testing started with 96 ETH and the staked share is scaling toward 60% of total value staked. On October 15 Lido used Chainlink CCIP to enable direct staking from layer-2 networks, letting users stake ETH held on Linea for wstETH without bridging back manually; MetaMask Card reopened UK sign-ups on October 20, spending USDC and WETH held on Linea, and on October 21 SharpLink disclosed $205.8 million of weETH restaked onto Linea.
BloFin removed LINEA from copy trading on September 21.
After Small Fields, Linea's focus is to keep pushing proving costs down and to decentralize the prover role: field extension moves from quartic to sextic, 31-bit arithmetic with AVX-512 lowers the hardware bar to consumer CPUs, and zkASM lets the same implementation prove for any prime field. Remaining roadmap items include multiple proving systems and decentralized block building; on the revenue side it relies on native yield on ETH deposits and Lido's L2 direct staking, with a shortened withdrawal window used to court institutional settlement use cases.
