Mintlayer is a Bitcoin-focused Layer 2 and sidechain solution with ML as its token, aiming to run asset issuance, trading, and DeFi under Bitcoin's security model, using atomic swaps for trustless exchange between assets without wrapped-BTC-style third-party custody. It addresses Bitcoin's lack of programmability and the trust assumptions of cross-chain bridges, and its positioning diverges from Ethereum-based wrapped-BTC approaches.
Among Bitcoin L2s, Mintlayer's distinction is the sidechain-plus-atomic-swap route rather than payment channels or client-side validation. On May 4, 2026, the team announced the retirement of the original Ethereum ERC-20 ML and opened a migration channel; on September 21 it confirmed November 1 as the final migration deadline, after which unmigrated tokens stay permanently locked in the original contract. Alongside this, work continues on a new permanent bridge and a new ERC-20 ML, with cross-chain transfers designed to complete in about 10 minutes, widening ML's reach across EVM venues.
