Paxful is a peer-to-peer crypto asset trading platform founded in New York in 2015. Buyers and sellers match through listings, the platform escrows the seller's assets until payment is confirmed, and hundreds of payment methods are supported, with a user base concentrated in South America, Africa and South Asia where banking coverage is limited. It addresses the lack of usable on-ramps in those regions by wiring local payment methods directly into crypto buying and selling.
On the operations side, the marketplace was suspended in April 2023 amid litigation between co-founders and the departure of key staff, restored in May 2023 after a court-appointed custodian team took over, and given a brand and product overhaul in October 2024. The platform has now published a closure notice: buying, selling and trading have stopped, leaving only account access and balance withdrawal, with monthly maintenance fees possibly accruing on unclaimed balances. It is discussed as a governance and compliance case study among peer-to-peer trading platforms.
Paxful tiers its P2P sell escrow fee by payment method: 0.5% for bank transfers and 1% for credit or debit cards, digital currencies, online wallets, cash and goods or services.
Paxful charges a 3% escrow fee on gift card trades and 5% on iTunes and Google Play cards, while in-platform cryptocurrency conversions incur 0.5%.
