Về Optimism
Optimism is the Ethereum Optimistic Rollup scaling solution and the coordination layer of the Superchain ecosystem, providing Layer 2s for developers and a low-fee trading environment for users. It addresses Ethereum mainnet congestion and high gas by separating execution, sequencing and settlement through the modular OP Stack framework, letting multiple OP chains share sequencers and interoperability standards. Its core mechanisms include the fraud-proof challenge window of the Optimistic Rollup, sequencer revenue redistribution, and a unified super root fault proof that extends single-chain output roots into cross-chain message verification, securing Superchain interoperability.
The trade-off is that optimistic rollups must wait out a challenge window for finality, delaying cross-chain messages, and the ecosystem relies heavily on a few sequencers and foundation coordination. In September 2026, Optimism completed the Upgrade 20 mainnet deployment, upgrading fault proofs to multi-chain super roots.

Buyback & governance: In January 2026, Optimism governance approved a plan to direct 50% of net Superchain sequencer revenue toward monthly OTC buybacks of OP (a 12-month pilot launched in February); cumulative buybacks reached about 9 million OP (roughly $781,000) by August, with repurchased tokens held in the Collective treasury. In September, governance approved Upgrade 20, deployed to mainnet later that month, upgrading the fault-proof mechanism from single-chain output roots to multi-chain super roots, laying the foundation for Superchain interoperability.
Ecosystem & risks: On October 13, Unichain announced its testnet migration to OP Enterprise, with mainnet planned for October 29, while South Korea's KB Securities and Securitize are exploring tokenized money-market funds on OP Mainnet. On risks, sequencer revenue over the past year was about 5,868 ETH (roughly $17.5 million), far below unlock volumes: about 343 million OP are scheduled for release between May 2026 and April 2027, including over 31 million on May 31, and the Foundation cut over 20% of staff after Base exited the OP Stack in February.
On January 28, 2026 governance approved, with 84.4% support, a 12-month pilot directing 50% of net Superchain sequencer revenue into monthly open-market OP purchases held in the Collective treasury, starting in February; an August 7 forum update showed 9,451,924 OP bought across three purchases funded by 95.8 ETH of January revenue, 367.905 ETH of February revenue and 50.16 ETH of March revenue. On September 16 governance passed Upgrade 20, moving fault proofs from Output Root to Super Root dispute games and anchoring claims to timestamps instead of L2 block numbers to prepare for multi-chain interoperability; four testnets upgraded September 17 and mainnet executed September 24. On October 9 Uniswap Labs handed Unichain's production operations — sequencer, RPC, monitoring and incident response — to Optimism under OP Enterprise, with testnet migration on October 13 and mainnet on October 29. OP turned over $232 million on October 14 and remains about 97% below its all-time high. Future strategy and roadmap: Optimism splits OP Enterprise into managed and self-managed tiers, selling operational capability: Unichain is fully managed across sequencer, RPC and incident response, while Upbit's GIWA Chain keeps its own sequencer and buys only monitoring, failover and priority patches, with own-not-rent as the pitch to large institutions. The risk is equally clear, since Base has said it will move to an in-house stack, eroding the Superchain revenue base. Renewal of the buyback pilot, the revenue split and treasury use will be reviewed in one governance vote, while Upgrade 20's Super Root reserves structure for cross-chain fault proofs. OP Stack handled about 66.8% of Ethereum L2/L3 transactions in the first nine months of 2026, so scale remains while monetization depends on service contracts.
