In July 2026, Aerodrome announced a merger with Velodrome into a cross-chain DEX called 'Aero', replacing weekly gauge voting with Predictive Allocation and expanding to Ethereum mainnet; the merger goes live on October 21, 2026 (1 old AERO converts to 1 new AERO and 1 VELO to 0.044 AERO, lifting total supply from 2 billion to 2.12 billion). The Protocol Growth Fund continues to buy back and lock AERO with protocol revenue: 216,000 AERO bought back and max-locked on July 2, nearly 200 million AERO bought back and locked to date; another 2.75 million locked on August 24; and the Momentum Fund pilot repurchased 8.7 million AERO.

On revenue, Q1 and Q2 2026 protocol revenue were $18.31 million and $16.10 million respectively, about $34.41 million in H1; Q1 buybacks totaled $4.8 million (about 31% of fees). About 54% of circulating supply is locked as veAERO, and the team unlock cliff is in February 2028. Binance will swap VELO and AERO for users, and AERO deposits and withdrawals pause on November 3.

At 8:00 pm ET on October 21, 2026, the merger of Aerodrome and Velodrome went live as Aero, running simultaneously on Base, Ethereum mainnet, OP Mainnet, Arbitrum, Robinhood Chain, Ink and Arc, with both legacy protocols ending emissions. AERO converts 1:1, VELO at 0.044, leaving Velodrome's community with 5.5% of the new supply capped at about 2.127 billion tokens; veAERO and veVELO become sAERO, weekly voting gives way to continuous per-pool allocation, and rewards are priced in dollars and capped against each pool's projected revenue. Before the merger Aerodrome held about 58% of Base onchain spot volume and Velodrome about 60% of OP Mainnet, with combined TVL near $422 million on October 9. Coinbase offers free conversion on November 2–4. Future strategy and roadmap: Aero's merger stitches two local monopolies into one cross-chain spot network: Aerodrome held 58% of Base DEX volume and Velodrome 60% on OP Mainnet, and the seven chains together trade about $120 billion a month, yet roughly $510 million of the $580 million in lifetime revenue came from Base alone, so monetising expansion depends on replicating the flywheel elsewhere. Mechanically it replaces ve(3,3) with transferable sAERO, swaps weekly voting for repeatable Predictive Allocation, and uses Gauge Caps to hold emissions near 1.2 times expected revenue, binding issuance to income and using issuance to buy depth. The real growth story is tokenised equities, where its share rose from 2% in September to 57% in October, deciding whether Aero becomes spot infrastructure or another liquidity farm.

Aero takes a 10% protocol fee on swap fees generated by unstaked liquidity in emissions-eligible Slipstream concentrated liquidity pools. Swap fees generated by staked liquidity are counted 100% as exchange revenue and distributed in full to veAERO holders every week.
